Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Have questions? Here are the answers to the most common ones.

What do I need to apply?

To apply for an ABN as a sole trader, you will need:

  • A valid Tax File Number (TFN) - Can’t find your TFN? See here
  • Personal details (name, date of birth, contact information)
  • Business details, including your business activities
  • An Australian address for your business
How much does it cost to register an ABN?

There is a one-time $45 (incl. GST) Application Fee for a fast and hassle-free application process. It can be classified as a business expense and is 100% tax-deductible.

How long does it take to get an ABN?

ABNs are issued instantly, most of the time, if the application is completed correctly. However, in some cases, the Australian Business Register (ABR) may require additional checks, which can take up to 28 days.

What is an ABN?

An Australian Business Number (ABN) is an 11-digit unique identifier issued by the Australian Business Register (ABR).

It helps businesses interact with government agencies, customers, and other businesses.

An ABN is required for issuing invoices, claiming GST credits, and registering a business name.

Do I need an ABN?

You generally need an ABN, if you are operating as a sole trader, freelancer, or independent contractor and are carrying on a business or earning income from business activities. If you don’t have an ABN, other businesses may withhold tax at the highest rate when paying you.

Is an ABN the same as a business name?

No, an ABN and a business name are different.

An ABN identifies your business, while a business name is the name under which you trade.

If you want to operate under a name different from your own legal name, you must register a business name separately with ASIC.

Can I use my ABN for multiple businesses?

Yes, as a sole trader, you can use the same ABN for multiple business activities as long as they are operated under your individual name.

However, if you plan to operate under different business names, you may need to register those business names separately.
